The dress code in Australia is similar to that of the English language; full of confusion and fraught with contradiction.
Wearing a bikini down the street is perfectly appropriate; in fact it is even fashionable to have those strings dangling down the nape of your neck. However, wearing a bra down the street is uncalled for, and places you at a possibly being arrested for indecent exposure. What is the difference between bikini and bra, especially when some of the lingerie is more aquatic than alluring?
Where does this double standard come from? Skimpy clothing is persistently accepted in the summer but come the season of snow, and then those who bare their bellies and thighs revealing tan lines face the wrath of society.
While calls for a more modest approach to fashion are a staple to society’s issues, it is the double standard that largely has been largely ignored despite the obvious flaws in terms of what we can wear without repercussion.
