There are people out that claim that the high court rarely
overrules the parliament. Well to those naysayers... please go and eat those
words.
After the High Court ruled an injunction for Asylum seekers
to temporarily not be transported to Malaysia as a part of the proposed “Malaysia
Solution” in August until a final decision was made.
Late August and the decision was made regarding the “Malaysia
Solution” declaring it invalid thus, meaning the solution was more a problem
than a fix.
So for the government it means that they have to renege the
deal which means a bit of foreign diplomatic kerfuffle but more locally, a
wider criticism of the government.
As if the government needs this on top of their other
concerns.
Our Prime Minister, Julia Gillard has been under a cloud of
controversy, first through the Carbon tax, here alleged handling of the Craig
Thomson scandal and now the issues to do with immigration.
Some sources and respected journalists claim it is not a
matter of if, but when Gillard will get the “Rudd treatment” and be kicked out
of leading the party.
Where does Gillard go from here? Well, a hard round of PR
and spin doctoring perhaps will not be enough but it is a start, but also
finding solutions to these problems, but as 2011 draws to a close and one year
or so left to the next election, if there is enough time, is another matter.
