September 1 in the southern hemisphere means plenty of
things including the first day of
Spring and promise of warmer weather but it
also means that (especially) this year that more names and signings to new
teams, will be announced.
While negotiations begin (formally) on August 1 most riders
seems unable to talk til around the next month (doesn’t stop all from revealing
earlier though).
With the Australian cycling outfit GreenEdge going on the offensive
and already naming both rising and iconic Australia and International cyclists.
One name that can be added to this list is Robbie McEwen.
A rider known for as much his success as well as the fact he
rarely needs someone to protect him from the intensity of a final bunch sprint
to win the race/stage, can be added to the list of GreenEdge riders.
Announcing that this will be his last year in pro-cycling (retiring
around Mid July) he will then move into a tactical management role with the
fledgling team.
It is only but a benefit for the younger lads on the team
now having access to both Stuart O’Grady and Robbie McEwen on their side will guarantee
a good learning curve throughout the team’s initial season.
And in other news you’d think that the worst kept secret in
the cycling world would be officially released, but alas no. Sprinter Mark
Cavendish is rumoured, heck spectators are adamant he is heading to Team Sky
but still, an announcement has not come about. Infuriating some, others
apathetic to what they already know.
So as September 1 has hit we, the cycling fans should see
more names for GreenEdge be revealed but also find out if the man from the Isle
of Man is reaching for the Sky, Team Sky that is.
