Australian Sam “Slamming” Stosur has claimed her first Grand
Slam title at the US Open in emphatic passion.
Defeating the formidable 28th Seed Serena
Williams, Stosur held her nerve to win in straight sets, 6-2 6-3.
On the other side of the net, keeping composure could not be
said for the injury ridden Williams who fired off as many insults to the umpire
as Stosur did sizzling serves.
Williams, as the national hero was expected to win, being a
strong favourite to add to her collection of grand slam titles.
But either she was not hungry enough, or was not on her
game, underestimating the hunger felt by Stosur to win her maiden title.
The Australian from Queensland has overcome her own lessons
to claim this title, to not get cocky that is, a result of her shattering loss
in the French Open final two years back.
Seems that being the underdog works well for the down to
earth tennis player who in a euphoric status climbed to the stands to hug the
family and coach, reminiscent of Rafa Nadal when he first won Wimbledon.
Congratulations Sam, you bloody deserve it!
