The best thing about the first stage in any tour, Grand or
otherwise is the randomness of who claims the leader’s jersey, because, someone’s
got to do it.
In the Tour of Britain Mark Cavendish through a trademark
sprint at the assistance of teammate Aussie Mark Renshaw has put on the yellow.
Still looks better in green though.
Most of the time random riders get the leaders jersey for
the fact the main contenders don’t want it until the time is ready (i.e. last
few days, or last week in the three week races).
In that first week, sure watching the race means to look at
the scenery, the actual racing but for me it is also to see other riders
normally obscured by the bright bulbs of light shining on the big stars, have a
time to shine.
So when you watch another cycling race, make sure those
first days or first week is seen, you might just become a fan of someone who
isn’t a big star... yet.
