If I had a dollar for every
time there is a new holiday, public or otherwise, I’d be one rich blogger.
Today, in Australia at least is
Father’s Day, a day where we, the children rip out the infinite drawer of
socks, of jocks and of handkerchiefs and chocolates, but who can forget the
corny card?
But while it is a token
holiday, one that really has no cultural impact it is important to acknowledge
those members in our lives, to appreciate them on a certain day, mind you, we
should every day but apparently that’s not the way anymore.
We have Mother’s day and for
Canberrans out there; Family and Community Day (yes, there is such a thing). With
all these abstract holidays they either mean a day off or clichéd gifts at our
disposal.
But the further meaning of
these days seems to be eclipsed by the proliferation of catalogues prom9ting
what to buy under different budget ranges.
So perhaps there are meanings
to these days after all, maybe it’s just the centre of a tiered cake, hidden
behind many (commercial) layers.
Thus, these days are not a mere
hallmark holiday.
