In Europe the indulgence is cheeses, pastries and breads as
well as wine, in America (and while this may be a generalisation) anything
deep-fried and battered, that or something from the Golden Arches.
Australia; the lucky country, on other hand seems to be
caught in the middle between these two continents.
In some part of this sun soaked and often bitterly cold
wintered country there are the connoisseurs (mainly in the cities) where
cheeses o all kind can be sought, and extend out of the Big three; tasty,
cheddar and Fetta.
Also in these areas there is a growing emphasis to enjoy
food, to make it an experience rather than a duty to our rumbling stomachs. In these
places even food traditionally seen as unhealthy are jazzed up to look and
taste spectacular, a far cry from the McDonalds down the road.
But for the uni student out there it is not always sensible
to have food orgasms; an experience with food that seems to hit the right spot,
making you go back for more. For starters we have barely any money to go an
splash out on a night at a restaurant when a) there is readings to do or b) the
more popular option, to save money to get and get grog for the next night out.
But getting back to my original point, as said before Australia is caught in a hard
and fast place, on one had we have this growing culinary industry of good food
and appreciating it but in he other hand we still have this American mentality of
junk food.
In a recent survey/report/ gathering of information in an
educated way, it found that McDonalds prices vary between states and even
stores in the same city or suburbs.
And there are the price increases that come with the
franchises.
So while a good food experience is what we all desire but
cannot have, and take away, literally taking away the cents from us, it come to
my conclusion that there is nothing better than a home cooked meal.
