In the coming days Richie Porte (currently of Team Saxobank
Sunguard) will announce his intentions for 2012, with it likely being he moves
away from Bijarne Rijs and co.
As to where he goes? No-one knows yet but the Australian has
been linked with fellow Aussie Cadel Evans’ team, BMC. And if he were to join,
surely it would give BMC an extended boost with already signing big guns Thor
Hushovd and Philippe Gilbert.
The Tasmanian born Porte has stood out to be a future
contender for overall victories in the Grand Tours, and with valid reason. Last
year he placed 7th Overall in the Giro D’Italia and won the white
jersey for best young rider.
Also, another reason to tout Porte as a contender is his
ability to climb and time trial showing a strong finish in his first Le Tour De
France time trial by placing in the top ten, not bad for a debut.
It will be interesting to see where Porte goes and as to how
the move will affect him, will he lead the team? Will he again be relegated to
domestique to help his leaders?
As a new Port for Porte calls, and the curiosity of which
team he will join is building stronger than that of a cat, it will be
interesting to see if in a new team Porte can live up and build on his hype and
successes.
