It was Oprah who came to Australia last year,
and now, it should be the land down under that returns to favour and head to
the states
While it is true
that the US of A is in a bit of strife at the moment with some financial
worries, and a bit of bad bookkeeping it couldn’t be a better time for us
aussie to pack up the jayco and book with Qantas to head over to the states.
Helping the
economy and having a holiday? What is
this nonsense I speak of? Well, none
really.
While the
economic bear takes it grip on the flow of the good old green paper, at least
America has its monuments, its architecture, its Hollywood and of course; the
Happiest place on earth, Disneyland.
America has done
quite a lot to be honest, building a nation on the basis of fighting for
virtues of independence during the late 16th century, to today where
they distribute excessive amount of foreign aid, about 58 billion a year is
what gets filtered to 20 agencies (nations etc.).
Most of this
money goes to countries such as the now liberated Egypt in a midst of change,
Afghanistan, Israel, Pakistan and Nigeria that clearly needs the funds to
improve and raise the living standards. While America makes its mistakes, this
is not one of them, while the states are often the first port of call to criticise
this is one area less to attack on heated arguments.
And wasn’t it
America that landed the first man on the moon in 1969 and truly set the rocket
fuel to the fire of space engineering? Sure their motive was to beat the Soviet
Union, but for whatever the cause, we have America to thank for NASA, and the
immortal words of “one step for man, one giant leap for mankind” uttered by
Neil Armstrong.
So you can
imagine going to holiday there, to see Abe and Washington, trying to find the
real Springfield that matches the one in the Simpsons, having a problem in
Houston, or learning to hang ten and Hula in Hawaii.
For a country of
50 odd states we have plenty to be thankful for; for instance, both of the
world wars (France also have to be grateful for that, surely?) as well as developing
an alliance between the countries that makes it seem like Australia, and
America are geographic siblings.
Apart from the
earnest things to be grateful for, to be grateful that America was found to
begin with, is also the popular culture, so I say thanks to America for giving
us Elvis, Tom and Huckleberry, Paris
Hilton for laughs, Facebook, YouTube and
how could I forget Perez Hilton? However, I must deny thanks for Rebecca Black,
for she singlehandedly made Fridays a day to “get down” rather than chill out.
While there are
economic problems, why not help their economy?
Imagine tasting a New York hotdog or Pretzel, watching the Red Socks in
Boston, going the San Diego Zoo, and to see the majesty of Mt Rushmore, and of
the Rocky Mountains as well as Yosemite national Park?
While it is not
thanksgiving yet, I give my thanks to America for all that they have given both
in earnest and in lighter matters.
The least we can
do, fellow Australians, is take a holiday.
