Political Correctness, or PC as I have referred to it, might have polished our language from the vulgar, and inappropriate but like sandpaper to a piece of wood, if you rub too hard then there will be nothing left.
This is PC for you, when we talk between friends and family; those we feel comfortable to even say the most inappropriate things, there is a sense of a nagging feeling that perhaps you should not have said that name after all.
Should this happen? Probably not, but inevitably anything done in the public sphere will often be overdone before a balance occurs (so where does this place environmental damage in the future?).
In the news the PC epidemic has struck but in a viciously implied manner.
Former Prime Minister Bob Hawke, now 82 was seen enjoying the cricket with a plastic cup of beer. Being a warm day Hawke drank the beer rather quickly. However the media sooner, rather than later provided the readers that Hawke had “skulled” the drink.
No sooner than the reports of this “news” come out that had advertisements warning of binge drinking emerged.
I know that on the Daily Red i have been adamantly against the consumption of alcohol, and as a personal opinion, I hold this still but in this example is this hot piece of advertising a slight overreaction?
The man is 82, and had one drink, at the cricket, while awareness is needed, why not promote this on the billboards which still show beer, as opposed to trying to make an example from one beer, and an ex prime-minister all for the sake of maintaining Political Correctness.
