The Anti Midas

Being both non alcoholic and vegetarian to some, (as well as myself once upon a time) is unforgiving, and incomprehensible; if 2012 was wrapped up in a lifestyle change then this is it.

Deciding to be vegetarian was not a flash decision, it was not as if I woke up one morning and stopped (consciously) eating meat of all kinds. Rather, being at University it was cheaper to go without meat, to consume pastas and vegies, plus, the cooking time of meat just overexpended time to study.

One thing that I have realised about going green was that you don’t initially realise what can or can’t eat, somehow being vegetarian manages to throw more surprises up to you than how good that roasted capsicum tastes.

The same applies to the liquid labyrinth of alcohol. Long gone are the trifles doused with sherry or wine with the pasta but then I recall that this is all whimsical thinking; I was never a huge drinker anyway.

Besides the trips and turns that I have been taken on without these pretty large factors in
Australian culture (a Barbie and a beer) there is one positive that justifies the moments when a pining for meat or a cold drink peeps through.

Being both vegetarian and non alcoholic forces you to not affiliate too much with groups who conform to these practices (after a while, being the sober one at a party is about as appealing as watching Jaws over and over). Like the fable of King Midas and his “golden touch” having say, meat or UDL’s at your reach can’t be too good, there is both a lack of appreciation and respect. By living with some restriction there is more room to be both healthier in both mind and body, as the story of Midas goes, having it all at those finger tips can corrupt, and yes, this can begin with a T-Bone.
