Comedy in the past few years has, in the mainstream cinema, at least, comprised of a few factors; sex, hot girl, drunk night, oh and did I mention Mr Chou?
But this year, I recently saw the film The Change Up, yep, you guessed it, a manlier version of Freaky Friday that deals with the age old problem of thinking that the grass is truly greener on the other side.
Starring witty Jason Bateman and a very dashing Ryan Reynolds as two chalk and cheese best friends, one a workaholic father of three, and Reynolds as the slacker who practically never grew up, the story has them pissing in a Greek looking fountain that causes them to change bodies. This is where the shenagins ensue.
Apart from actors that lend their voices to cartoon films or CGI, I have a lot of respect for those who act in films where they have to swap bodies, for they need to understand not only their original character but get to know the ins, outs and quirks of the character that they become.
This is expertly done in The Change Up from beginning to when the power goes out for the final time (see the movie, and you’ll get what I mean).
For a little while, the movies pumped out of the Hollywood studios have been nothing short of spectacularly...crap, but The Change Up has well, changed that, being the exception that makes me laugh and squirm enough to enjoy a night out of the cinema without that feeling of, “there goes my money down the drain”.
