Over the past few weeks there has been two main problems
threatening to derail our minority government.
One of which is the Craig Thomson credit card rorting.
It had been revealed that Thomson used his union credit card
to pay for sexual escorts. Clearly this was out of line.
While the opposition called for his head to roll, and police
investigations were undertaken, the affair fell silent for a mere week or so.
Now as confirmation that the investigation had been dropped
came through, more revelations about Thomson’s credit card usage had come
through. One of the key facts was that his Amex (American Express) card was
paid for by a printing group who printed the newsletters of the Health Services
Union.
In the past day or so the government has come out and said
that they will not sack Thomson, not because they believe her hasn’t done
wrong, for he has, but because it potentially will spell the end of a minority government.
If he were to be sacked, a by-election in Thomson’s
electorate would take place, and if a liberal or national won or essentially any
party other than the ALP or Greens, then the balance of power would be turned
on its head.
However there comes a point when sometimes you need to sack
am MP because they’ve done the wrong thing, I know you might lose government
and all but really, is it in the best interest of Australia to set a precedent
that it is alright to accept parliamentary wrong doing?
It’s the problem that keeps on giving.
