It has always been the cliché that to get to the top you had
to sleep your way up there, but it seems in the 21st century, it’s a
case of out with the old, and in with the new, that is to say if you want to be
famous, have a YouTube account.
As a cause of YouTube being the platform for talent scouts
to seek out the latest heartthrob or teen sensation it has blessed society with
two names; Justin Bieber and Rebecca Black.
Bieber, a Canadian 17 year old and his mother used the site
to show videos of his musical prowess which is clearly there, it’s just not my
cup of tea.
While Rebecca Black posted a self made music video that
caused a viral sensation and while there are the haters, you have to admit,
she’s been pretty successful; having the song “glee-ified” and also Black
herself starring in a Katy Perry music video “This Friday Night T.G.I.F”. Not
bad for a 13 year old and a $2000 music video, is it?
While I’d prefer if talent was found the old fashioned way
this is the web 2.0 age and if anything, it’s just plain savvy to use these
platforms as a way to scout talent, for other people have the ability to
comment and watch these budding singers and entertainment acts it provides the
scouts with a way to mete out if these individuals have any potential success in them, or will be a dud.
The rise of the cyber star isn’t necessarily a bad thing;
it’s just a new breed of musicians coming to the fore in an innovative way.
