Mobile Madness

In a sense we are all like Hank off Californication but rather than being addicted to sex (On campus tells me otherwise, but anyway) we are addicted to our phones.

And it is more than a mobile phone it is the modern day rubies and diamonds to which we would coveted earnestly over 200 years ago. Heck, what type of mobile you have is usurping even the importance of the Tiffany’s engagement ring.

I was sitting in a lecture yesterday and noticed this process, what was the thing we first got out? A book? No siree, it was a phone, I swear as soon as this person who shall remain nameless got their phone out the room was a standstill her friends ooh and awed at it like it was a newborn which got me thinking about all this mobile madness and our seeming addiction to them.

The mobile phone is also a symbol of status; it has transcended its actual use and now dictates what sort of person we are.

For instance, in general terms, owning a Telstra phone means that you are from the country while Optus is generally the city.

Ladies, you don’t need to find out your guys horoscope anymore, just look at their phone!

I’ve noticed that an iPhone usually belongs to people who desire convenience but also wants to be on trend with phone fashion. Whereas a blackberry or its similar looking cousins tend to belong to people who desire to be professional and be organised.

And a final point, have we all gone so mad that we now treat people with prejudice for not owning a phone?

Here at the Daily Red owning a phone was like late puberty for boys; I didn’t get one until my late teens.

But when I told someone I didn’t own one? There was a gasp, and almost a sense of cold shouldering me.

No worries kids, peer pressure doesn’t come from ciggie anymore rather, from a phone.
And here lies the surprise folks; I had life without a phone, after Nostradamus didn’t predict we’d all die without a phone did he?

I have phone today but rarely use it, hell, the only texts I get now are from the library, yes, I did say the library.

So what I am trying to get at is that now the Mobile phone is more than a phone, it is a symbol of status, an extension of who we are and something covet. It’s madness!

Note: I just read on the news that ladies, most of you sleep with a phone under the pillow, or close by.... what the? Isn’t there enough time for you to gossip in the day and not in the night...Seems while the day can’t have more hours we’re trying to surely make it that way.
