The enduring effect of a really big fish

The fear (and pandemonium) of needing a bigger boat to defeat an insatiable shark, was in the 1970’s and even today, an enduring film.

Spielberg’s Jaws made not only me shudder and gag but prevented a few people from swimming. I mean, you know when a movie has an effect on the general populace when every time you dip your toe in the bath or go the beach that the theme music haunts your every step... courtesy of your friends of annoying brother.

While today Jaws in terms of special effects and even goriness is tame, for those that blatantly avoid the Horror movie genre and feels like peeing themselves when Pretty Little Liars ( a teen show with a tame thriller twist) Jaws nothing but.

Seeing the scene where the diamond in the rough character Quint is mauled by the shark, slowly and painstakingly eaten with blood oozing from all direction while he screams makes me squirm and feel like that midnight snack is less than appealing. And yes, I feel that way describing the scene, not actually watching it.

I admire Spielberg and the film, perhaps for this effect that it has on the people it can be considered a modern classic; a term oft coined but rarely deserved.
