Any expectations that I had when it comes to the cycling documentary Chasing Legends were dismissed as soon as it had started.
Unlike other documentaries, the cycling one began not with the HTC but in black and
white reminiscent on a time bygone. This disrupted the expected rhythm of how we all think these programs are meant to go and it forced the viewer to enter the program as a narrative, and not as a documentary.
It later develops and tracks the 2009 Tour De France for the team, showing both the stresses of the racing, the lighter moments, and of course; Cav’s haul of stage wins.
The blend of history and modernity in this documentary was executed much the same way in most stage sprints where Cavendish is involved; successful. The use of well known legends such as Eddy Merckx and smaller known such as the oldest Tour finisher to the cult of celebrity in Ben Stiller provided breaks from potentially being too cycling centric.
The music itself was just as grand as the picture tried to be painted by ITV about the tour; it held to a beat of majesty, a sweeping statement when it had and yes, it too had the effect to cause emotional involvement.
Overall the film was expertly created, genuinely enjoyable for both the avid and amateur viewer, and the best part of it all was its ability to somehow stop breaks in attention.
Four yellow jersey’s to Chasing Legends.
