The Token Brave Heart

Apart from the dorky teen, there is another character that in the past few months has been  plugged more than a kitchen sink when you lose the engagement ring down the pipe.

So who is this character?

It’s the delightful Brave-heart portrayed by Mel Gibson on the film of the same name to which he won an Academy Award.

While in the original film, the character wore painted on blue symbolising his national allegiance to Scotland, however in the 2011 release of The Smurfs he really was blue. And wore a kilt, you see, with a red beard, and the Scottish outfit, it was explicit that this Smurf was base on William Wallace.

And how about another illustration to show you all that Brave Heart is being typecast, a staple in films, like paper is to a paper clip; the two tend to the other.

The next film is going to be released, and is called Brave, which is about an anti-princess (got to love the movement toward girls being vigilantes and not the damsel in distress) with red hair going on a perilous quest. Oh, and did I mention, she’s Scottish?

It’s not often that a “serious” film has the impact to allow that said character to be ingrained into popular culture, but clearly this has happened. Though, lets be honest, it’s a bit of shame, because the move is great piece of work by Gibson.

It seems that no longer is it token in movies to have the nerd who watches Star Wars in his tighty whities but it is leaning toward the Brave Heart-esque character. And who can blame them? It is a damn good character.
