They say that when one star dies, it gives birth to another
one.
As Cadel Evans enters the sunset of his career, signing what
is believed to very well be his final three years of professional cycling, he
has had an illustrious career, beginning in mountain biking and ending with at least
one Tour de France title.
But of course, all this talk is premature, he has not
announced retirement but for the purpose of this article we will leave the
above paragraph as it is.
His final year is alleged to be in 2014, two years after the
Aussie cycling outfit GreenEdge is launched.
This will make cycling all the more entertaining.
As we prepare to farewell greats Stuart O’Grady and Robbie
McEwen in the coming years (both of which have signed with GreenEdge) it might
seem that cycling for Australia is coming to the end of a rope; frayed and
bloody hard to tie up.
However, do not fear cycling fans!
As we bid adieu to some of cycling’s greats (for Australia
at least) we will have a more collective future, beginning next year with the
launch of GreenEdge.
The first year will be nothing spectacular, an establishing
year to what we hope will be a long term vision, but in the second, third and
even fourth year we will perhaps begin to see the riders mature, and as a team
work more and more efficiently together, then can we perhaps expect results in
the grand tours and classics as well as the Olympics.
As careers end, there is a sense of melancholy, of sadness
but it’s not that bad, look on the upside, as the riders one by one retire, we’ll
have a team hopefully rising to give us the same pleasure that these setting
stars have given us for the past decades or so.
As they say; as one star goes, it reveals plenty more behind it.
What are your thoughts?
