They say the yellow is the most coveted colour in the
cycling universe, but second to that would surely have to be the Rainbow Jersey
which symbolises being the reigning world champion of road racing (there is an
individual rainbow jersey for the best time triallist in the world).
To many of the riders, achieving the rainbow is just as
sweet to them as it would be for others winning the yellow in Paris in July.
For the year of their reign and in a similar vein to a
beauty queen (these riders are anything but, though there are exceptions
ladies, just watch Le Tour next year and you’ll see what I mean). The rider
wears the rainbow in lieu of their actual team colours in all road racing apart
from the time-trial where that respective champion can wear his rainbow jersey.
The best thing that comes with the rainbow is the course
route. In the same way that Le
Tour De France changes each year to challenge
the defending champion. The UCI world road racing event changes its route, and
location every year. The past two years have seen the race come to Geelong in
Australia, a first for the nation and this year will visit Copenhagen which is
the capital of Denmark.
With great commentary and stealth of rainbow jersey’s to
give away to each of the divisions, the championships become a sort of festival
for the fans to see their stars both current and rising.
And again, comparing it to Le Tour, the championships
wherever they are held ensure to show off the best of the city meaning for the
wanderlust driven and those who prefer a pretty picture than that of bulging
thighs and poker faces of the cyclists then this is a programme to watch.
It’s the practically a coffee table book on your HD telly,
so as the race visits Copenhagen in a few months time, settle down with a nice
cup of hot chocolate and watch the race where the cyclists race for the worlds
to be on their shoulders.
Chapeau bas (Hat’s off) to them.
